Increasingly, universities are becoming harsher and more formal in their discipline of students. Gone are the days when punishments were informal with few repercussions. Even though a student may not formally be charged with criminal charges by the government, the repercussions of a school disciplinary proceeding can be harsh. In early 2008, a Philadelphia man was walking down the street, minding his own business and speaking on his phone, when the police stopped him and stated they needed to speak with him. Concerned that he may owe child support and be detained, the man exercised his constitutional right not to stop and continued walking. The police attempted to grab him and the man sprinted. As the police began to chase him, allegedly, a woman stated to the police that he had a gun. He continued running and according to police, pointed the gun at them. Jury found a Philadelphia woman accused of aggravated assault not guilty last week.
In January of 2012, a Philadelphia woman was attending a Beef and Beer fundraiser at her neighborhood bar with family and friends.
